Awards & Scholarships

CPRS Districct II accepts nominations to recognize and award outstanding contributions to the parks and recreation field. Award winners are recognized at the annual District II Awards and Installation Banquet.

Awards Criteria
The California Park & Recreation Society’s (CPRS) District II Awards Program recognizes excellence of those agencies and individuals that publicize, develop and manage programs, parks, and facilities that align with the VIP Action Plan mission areas:

- promoting participation in recreational experiences
- strengthening community image and sense of place
- strengthening safety and security
- promoting health and wellness
- fostering human development
- increasing cultural unity
- protecting natural resources
- supporting economic development
- facilitating community problem solving

Award Categories
Facility Design & Park Planning Award
Recognizes excellence in the planning and design of facilities and parks that promote participation in recreational experiences, strengthens community image and sense of place, strengthens safety and security, increases cultural unity, protect environmental resources, and facilitate community problem solving.

Recreation & Community Program Award
Recognizes excellence in recreation and community services program planning that encourages recreation participation, strengthens community image and sense of place, strengthens safety and security, promotes health and wellness, increases cultural unity, fosters human development, and facilitates community problem solving.

J.R. Needy Professional Award
The J.R. Needy Professional Award recognizes outstanding local accomplishments, achievements, and contributions to his/her agency, community involvement promoting “Creating Community Through People, Parks & Programs.

Champion of the Community Award
Awarded to individuals, agencies, community organizations, foundations, business, or educational institutions for outstanding public service in the support of Creating Community through People, Parks and Program. Recipients are chosen based upon their significant effort to influence and improve the quality of their community through parks, recreation, and community service. This award us intended for individuals who are not employed in the parks and recreation profession.

Agency Showcase Marketing Award
Recognizing excellence in printed or on-line materials that encourage participation in recreation activities, strengthen community image and sense of place, promote health and wellness, foster human development, increase cultural unity, protect environmental resources, and facilitate community problem solving.


Student Scholarships
The Student Scholarship Awards recognizes those students, graduate or under graduate, who have shown outstanding achievement and professional potential. Nominees must be majoring in the field of Recreation and Parks at an institution of higher education located within the geographical boundaries of District II.  Students must be sponsored by educators, professionals, place of employment or student organizations. (CPRS membership is not required.)

Arvid Pauly Student Award
$400 and 1-year CPRS membership

Edwin L. Z'berg Memorial Student Award
$850 and 1-year CPRS membership
